days 2-5

Most days started with a crash course in Bemba (Muli Shani!) followed by immersion and engagement with our community partner Hope - learning about their community and the powerful partnership with Spark Ventures that has impacted thousands of lives. At the first day’s welcome program at Hope School, Ashley quickly earned respect with the students for her clearly superior dancing abilities 💃🏼. Other mornings were packed visiting cultural and historical landmarks, learning to shop like Zambians at the Masala market, and a work project at Hope’s new vegetable farm 🌱(where Kristin supervised the planting process with a cult-like following of students).

In the afternoon, we experienced firsthand the high impact work of Hope serving meals (Constance was in the lead last time we checked for most scoops of nshima), reading with students and leading creative projects 🎨(Patti and Jenny - thanks for the clouds, rainbows, keys and beads!).

Highlights of the week included getting to know our reading partners, visiting the home of a student (where Rachel helped the group navigate the now infamous “bridge”, trying authentic Zambian cuisine and of course, the African naming ceremony of Spark/Ignite cofounder Rich Johnson - now known as “Lubuto”. For those who returned, we deepened relationships (great to see the bond grow with Andrea and Emmanuel), and for first-timers, you know you’ll be family next time you visit.

cultural immersion & community engagement

At Ignite we provide experiences that elevate purpose, promote inclusion and cultivate personal and professional development. We do this through a curated itinerary of immersion and engagement that fosters authentic connections and provides off-the-beaten path experiences to give you a true sense of the people, country and culture. This journey was in partnership with Spark Ventures, whose decade-long commitment to Hope Ministries in Zambia provided an up close and personal social impact experience.

Hope empowers the community in Ndola through education, nutrition and healthcare initiatives. On this journey, our travelers collaborated with the students of Hope School, contributed to the local farm and learned from the inspiring leaders, culture and values of this amazing Zambian community.

Making a Difference

our experiences are built around partnerships that empower communities

Engage in projects that are creative, physical or strategic.
  • Creative projects include academic learning, reading, art, music and sports.
  • Physical activities include giving local workers a break from their regular duties in the kitchen, serving meals, or joining projects like painting, planting, or landscaping.
  • Strategic activities are designed to match travelers with specific skill sets or backgrounds with organizational, business, or leadership development related needs and opportunities.
You'll work alongside leaders at Hope Community School in Zambia. Hope provides high-impact nutrition, education and healthcare programing to over 350 vulnerable children in their community. Learn more about Hope and our long-standing commitment to their powerful community work via our philanthropic partner, Spark Ventures - here.

Days 6-8

After an early rise on Friday, we took two short flights to get to Livingstone our home base for the next few days. ✈️

After lunch and a brief rest at the hotel, we crossed the border to Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 for an incredible 4 course sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi River, where we saw our first hippos and elephants. 🐘

Saturday morning included Game Drives (white rhinos!), zip lining and our fearless bungee jumper: Beth! Then we celebrated our tour guide Brillian’s birthday with a picturesque lunch along the river at the David Livingstone lodge. The afternoon culminated with exploring one of the Seven Wonders of the World - Victoria Falls.

Our last full day was on safari in Botswana with giraffe, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, lions (yes!) and more elephants than we could count. We finished out the journey with a memorable dinner sharing insights, intentions and toasting to our amazing experience together. 🍻
